Helpful Gift-shopping Tips
- Give a gift of 'a few of their favorite things'
- If giving money or a gift card, attach it to something tangible
- When choosing to give gift cards, make sure of the fine print.
Some actually charge a service charge and expire!
- Gift wrapping suggestions -- use newspaper comics
- Make something out of something you already have. Take an old
t-shirt, sew the sides and bottom, add a draw string and you've made
a bag they can re-use.
- Attending a party? Donate gifts to a good cause or charity in
lieu of gifts for the birthday person
- Giving movie tickets? Wrap a box of popcorn and Jr Mints with
tickets
- When a new baby is born, buy the newspaper for that day and give
it to the new parents when visiting the new little angel
- New baby? Barefoot wine has a baby footprint on their label -
add a personalized pacifier and you're all set!
- Give the gift of YOU. YOU taking them to lunch/dinner, YOU
taking them to the movies, YOU taking them shopping :)
- Stuck for ideas? Call Carried Away Gifts :)
Helpful Household Tips
- Recycle your holiday cards -
InfoBarrel.com.
- More than a dozen love-themed postmarks offering ‘Valentine’
postmarks at
USPS.com.
- Reheat Pizza - Heat up leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on
top of the stove, set heat to medium-low and heat until warm. Crust
stays crispy - no soggy microwave pizza.
- Easy Deviled Eggs - Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag,
seal, and mash until they're broken up. Add remaining ingredients,
reseal baggie, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly. Cut the tip off
the baggy corner and squeeze mixture into eggs. Throw bag away when
done! Easy clean up.
- More Frosting - Whip a container of cake frosting with your
mixer for a few minutes and it will double in size. Frost more cakes
or cupcakes with the same amount and you also eat less
sugar/calories per serving.
- Reheating refrigerated bread - To warm biscuits, pancakes, or
muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup
of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help
it reheat faster.
- Newspaper weeds away - Place wet newspapers in layers around
your plants, overlapping as you go. Cover with mulch. Weeds will get
through some types of gardening plastic but they will not get
through wet newspapers.
- Broken Glass - The fibers in a dry cotton ball will pick up
little broken glass pieces of glass.
- No More Mosquitoes - Place a dryer sheet in your pocket to keep
mosquitoes away.
- Squirrel Away - Sprinkling plants with cayenne pepper will keep
squirrels from eating your plants. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt
the plant.
- Bike Identification - After purchasing a new bike for your
child, place their picture inside the handle bar before placing the
grips on. If the bike is stolen and later recovered, remove the grip
and there is the proof of who owns the bike.
- Flexible vacuum - To get something out of a heat register or
from under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift
wrap roll on the end of your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to
get in narrow openings.
- Reducing Static Cling - Pin a small safety pin to the seam of
your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Also works
with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in pants
seam.
- Measuring Cups - Before pouring sticky substances into a
measuring cup, fill it with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but
don't dry the cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter,
and watch how easily it comes right out.
- Foggy Windshield? - Use a chalkboard eraser to rub foggy
windows! Works better than a cloth!
- Conditioner - Use hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's
cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs feeling really
smooth.
- Goodbye Fruit Flies - To get rid of pesky fruit flies, fill a
small glass halfway with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of
dishwashing liquid and mix well. Flies are drawn to the cup and gone
forever!
- Get Rid of Ants - Put small piles of cornmeal where you see
ants. They eat it but can't digest it so it kills them. It may take
a week or so and is safe, you don't have the worry about pets or
small children being harmed!
- Take baby powder to the beach - Keep a bottle of baby powder in
your beach bag and when you're ready to leave the beach sprinkle
yourself and the kids with the powder and the sand will slide right
off.
- Cleaning copper - Generously spread catsup on your copper. Leave
on for few minutes then rinse with warm water. Also good for copper
bracelets.
